Sustainability through IT refurbishing

IT refurbishers act in an ecologically sustainable manner. The reuse of IT hardware reduces the resource-consuming production of new devices, reduces CO2 emissions and conserves valuable metals and minerals that do not have to be mined for refurbished devices.

Professional disassembly reduces e-waste and enables raw material recovery. What distinguishes the non-profit IT company AfB from other refurbishers: AfB customers purchase high-quality refurbished business equipment at low prices and thus promote inclusion. All process steps are designed to be barrier-free, because 48% of around 660 employees are people with disabilities.

Business

AfB takes over discarded company hardware with security transport and specially developed notebook boxes, records and anonymizes the devices, deletes the data on them with a certificate, tests and cleans them, upgrades them and sells them in AfB stores or in the AfB online store with at least a 12-month warranty. Customer service, warranty and a favorable price - AfB thus enables even financially disadvantaged people to buy high-quality IT and thus participate in an increasingly digitalized society.

By deleting data and refurbishing used hardware, AfB reduces electronic waste and saves CO2, energy and raw materials through reuse compared to new production. Hardware that is no longer marketable is recycled in Europe, and the raw materials it contains are returned to the economic cycle and substitute for undignified mining in resource-rich regions of the world.

Thanks to a study by the Technical University of Berlin, this contribution to environmental and climate protection can be precisely quantified. Compared to new production, the resources could be saved: see graphic effect AfB-Group.

By 2025, AfB has set itself the goal of saving 500,000 tons of CO2 and 1.5 million MWh of energy. To achieve this, AfB plans to create a total of 850 jobs and, as an inclusive company, to fill at least 400 of them with people with disabilities. This is possible if companies, banks, insurance companies and public-sector institutions recognize their responsibility in the IT sector and have their used IT refurbished rather than scrapped.
